Derek Abella
Illustrator
Derek Abella is a Cuban-American illustrator based in New York City. His dream-like work is centered around people’s relationships with their environments, their emotions, and with each other in an abstracted, textured way. In his personal art practice, he explores queerness, community, and isolation through the human figure. Derek’s perspectives have led him to be commissioned by publications and brands around the world, adding a sense of tenderness to all the projects he takes on.

Inspired by Art Deco friezes in my native Miami, one image is a symmetrical arrangement of flowers and plants. The other, an abstracted interpretation of these natural forms. Order and its opposite can both lead to beautiful solutions.
Connecting with nature helps us communicate better with each other. You can share this moment with someone else, or discover this centered, restful feeling on your own. Either route is just as powerful.
